Cape Elizabeth Retreat

Perched on the shoreline of Cape Elizabeth, this newly constructed cedar-shingled estate was conceived as a multigenerational summer retreat. Seen from the water, broad lawns roll down to a pebbled shore, the main house and pool house sitting comfortably within the tree line. At dusk, warm light pours through the soaring steel-framed window wall, the shingle roofline and copper details glowing against  Maine sky.

Inside, the double-height living room is both grand and livable — white oak-paneled walls, a monumental window wall flooding the room with coastal light, and a large-scale work of contemporary art above the black marble fireplace giving the room its wit. The library bar, fully sheathed in white oak with open shelves, a dark stone counter, and a brass drinks trolley, earns every hour spent in it. In the kitchen, a farmhouse sink beneath a wide picture window frames a view that reaches over flowering gardens and out to the open water of Casco Bay.

The pool house great room is airy and exuberant — vaulted shiplap ceilings, globe pendants, a long communal table, and a pair of bold yellow-and-white striped chairs beside a stone fireplace. The glass wall opens to a limestone terrace where chaise longues line the pool and hydrangeas billow in every direction. At golden hour, it is the estate at its most itself — generous, unhurried, and entirely of this place.
